Location: 3800 South 115th Street
This 8.6 acre property was acquired in 2004, in partnership with Cascade Land Conservancy. The preserve
opened in 2010, and restoration is ongoing, with monthly Friends of the Hill work parties. The Hill’s
summit provides views of the Green - Duwamish Watershed from Mt. Rainier to Elliott Bay. Rare native plant
communities include stands of young madrone trees and rare lowland rocky bald habitat. The Hill is part of
a mid-Duwamish Valley cultural landscape significant in Puget Sound Salish traditional stories known as the
“Epic of the Winds.” Facilities at the site include trails, viewpoints and an outdoor classroom gathering
area which accommodates approximately 50 people. This is a passive neighborhood park for families to explore,
and is located on the Duwamish River east of East Marginal Way.
Future restoration plans include creation of a native plant cultural garden and habitat area on the Hill’s
north side, and enhancement of the Duwamish River shoreline. Acquisition of this property and Phase I
restoration and development were made possible by major funding from 4Culture (King County Lodging Tax),
Conservation Futures Tax (CFT), King Conservation District, King County Department of Natural Resources
Waterworks Program, The Boeing Company, Washington State Heritage Capital Projects Program, Washington State
Recreation & Conservation Office (formerly IAC), the City of Tukwila, and other corporate and foundation
donors. Additional grant funding will be sought for the design and construction of future phases of the project.
