Mission Statement:
"The City of Tukwila, in the spirit of partnership with its community,
is preserving and enhancing a vibrant and healthy quality of life by providing
caring, effective and efficient service. As stewards of our community, we are
dedicated to the core values of Quality, Caring, Service, Excellence, Respect and Integrity."
Tukwila is a non-charter optional code city operating under a Mayor/Council form of government. The Mayor is elected at-large to a four-year term of office and serves as the City's chief administrative officer. The Mayor is responsible for seeing that the laws and ordinances are enforced. The Mayor attends and presides over City Council meetings, but does not vote except in the case of a tie. The Mayor may veto ordinances, but a majority plus one of the entire Council membership can override the Mayor's veto. The Mayor is assisted in all of his duties by the City Administrator.
The City Administrator is responsible for oversight of the daily activities of the City. All Department Heads report to the City Administrator. Also reporting to the City Administrator are the Municipal Court, the Office of Human Services, the Economic Development Director, the City Attorney's Office and the City Clerk's Office.
The Tourism and Marketing Division falls under the Economic Development Division of the Mayor's Office. This program is funded by a special excise tax of one percent on the sale of or charge made for the furnishing of lodging. The tax applies to lodging by a hotel, rooming house, tourist court, motel or trailer camp. The Tourism Office oversees the Seattle Southside website which offers tourism information for Tukwila and the surrounding area.
