Current Projects

Project Name: Link Light Rail

Location: Click here to view map

Description:

Sound Transit is constructing the Tukwila Freeway Route Project (TFR Project), the Tukwila portion of the Central Link Light Rail Project. The TFR Project will include 4.9 miles of trackway, 87% of which will be elevated, and 70% of which will be in Washington State Department of Transportation right-of-way. A station is under construction at the southeast corner of the intersection of Southcenter Boulevard and International Boulevard with a transit center, two park and ride lots (north and south of Southcenter Boulevard), and street frontage improvements in both Tukwila and SeaTac. Along the trackway five detention ponds, three traction power substations, street improvements and a bridge over the Duwamish River directly west of the East Marginal Way South bridge will be built.

The TFR Project includes placing certain project facilities, such as the transit trackway columns, in Tukwila right-of-way (portions of East Marginal Way S., 52nd Ave. S. and Southcenter Blvd.). To mitigate the impacts of introducing these facilities into City right-of-way, the Sound Transit proposal includes a number of safety features (curbs, sidewalks, lighting) as well as utility undergrounding and stormwater control along these roadways. A new signalized street intersection will be built where the two park-and-ride lot driveways intersect across Southcenter Blvd. (approximately 420 feet east of International Blvd).

NOTE: Sound Transit is holding regular monthly meetings to inform the community about construction progress. At these meetings, the contractor, PCL Construction Services, will provide the latest news about upcoming light rail construction work in Tukwila. The contractor and Sound Transit staff will also respond to questions and issues. Meetings occur on the first Thursday of each month, for additional information go to:

Project Name: Tukwila Urban Center Plan

Location: The Tukwila Urban Center area is bounded on the north by I-405, to the west by I-5, to the east by the City limits, and to the south by S. 180th Street.

Description:

A draft sub-area plan for the Southcenter area - an economically thriving retail area in a suburban pattern of development. Tukwila's new redevelopment strategies will support the continued success of existing uses, with districts of more urban mixed-use development including residential, entertainment, restaurant, life-style retail, and office components. These districts are envisioned as active, mid-rise areas with pedestrian-oriented streets, connecting the expanding Westfield Southcenter Mall with the Sounder Commuter Rail/Amtrak Station.

View the City's Urban Center Plan for Southcenter page for more information.

The City's Legal Notices section of the website may also contain information regarding the project.

Project Name: Design of Permanent Commuter Rail/Amtrak Station in Tukwila

Location: The station will be constructed south of Longacres Way, adjacent to the BNSF railroad tracks. Currently, a temporary station is located on the property.

Description:

Sound Transit will be replacing the temporary Tukwila Station with a permanent station. The station will accommodate Sounder commuter rail and Amtrak service. Station components will include two 600' platforms, passenger shelters, ticket vending machines, parking (initially 350 stalls), bike storage, on-site bus circulation for passenger loading and unloading, and station amenities. Connections to adjacent land uses and the Tukwila Urban Center, enhanced pedestrian accessibility, relocating the Union Pacific railroad tracks eastward, and creating opportunities for future transit-oriented development on the site are critical elements of the site layout.

Sound Transit completed the required environmental documentation (NEPA) in 2009. Preliminary engineering (60% design) is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2009, and a new Unclassified Use Permit approved early in 2010. The construction of the permanent station is anticipated to be constructed in 2012.
