The role of the Department of Community Development (DCD) is to assist the community in determining the type, scale and character of private and public development and where it should occur. In addition, during the development and maintenance of the City's Comprehensive Plan (1995, amended), the Department organizes the overall direction for public capital facilities, services and programs that the municipal government offers its citizens.
The DCD then ensures that the physical development of the City meets the expectations established within the Comprehensive Plan. Through land use approvals and building permit review and issuance, DCD reviews for minimum safe standards and environmental impact.
The DCD also works with other government agencies to represent Tukwila citizens and their interests. It ensures that potential development can accommodate the job and household growth forecasted for the region and expected in the City.
Responsibility for the Recycling Program, Commute Trip Reduction, and Code Enforcement are also entrusted to the DCD.
