Portable Fire Extinguishers Inspection Procedures
Monthly Inspection: Performed by the occupant/tenant
- 1. Extinguisher in place on a hanger
- 2. Accessible, visible and not obstructed
- 3. Operating instructions facing out
- 4. Seals in place
- 5. No physical damage
- 6. Pressure gauge reads full
Annual Inspection: Performed by the occupant/tenant
Perform a monthly inspection and in addition:
- 1. Examine all external mechanical parts for defects or damage.
- 2. Dry chemical type or multi-purpose type extinguishers will be turned upside down and shaken to loosen the powder.
- 3. Examine hose and nozzle for obstructions, defects or damage.
- 4. CO2 extinguishers will be weighed by a service company to determine if they are full.
Extinguishers shall be serviced and/or hydrostatically tested by a reputable company, according to the following table:

Each extinguisher shall have a tag or label attached to indicate the dates of monthly and annual inspections and the initials of the inspecting person. These are guidelines established by the Tukwila Fire Department under NFPA-10.
