- Any qualified lateral firefighter who has been employed by another fire department for less than four years will enter the Tukwila Fire Department as a third class firefighter. The first year of employment will be considered the probationary year during which the firefighter will be evaluated. At the end of the probationary year, the firefighter will either be given the examination to advance to first class or allowed to advance to second class without a test. The determination will be made based on the probationary evaluations.
Continuous Testing Process:
We offer open and continuous testing for lateral (experienced) firefighter applicants. Our initial testing process is made up of two parts: A written examination and an oral board. The two-hour written examination consists of 100 multiple choice questions based on IFSTA Essentials 4th Edition, followed by a one-hour oral board with the fire department administrative team. The physical ability assessment will be replaced by a more comprehensive medical examination post-offer.
Candidates will be placed on the continuous Lateral Firefighter Eligibility List for a one-year period of time based on their cumulative testing scores, which will consist of 40 percent of the written score and 60 percent of the oral board score. A score of 70 percent or better on each test component is required for placement on the List. Candidates will remain on the list until such time as one of the following conditions applies: Window of eligibility has lapsed if not currently employed as a firefighter; candidate’s one-year testing date window has elapsed; candidate has declined an offer; or a background investigation provides cause for removal.
♦ Open continuous testing is available
